Schools could be given guidance on how to prevent pupils from cheating on coursework with a new artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, the exams watchdog for England has said.Ofqual said it will consider whether new guidance should be drawn up after The Telegraph revealed that head teachers were preparing for emergency talks on potential widespread plagiarism that could go undetected.Dr David James, the deputy head teacher of Lady Eleanor Holles School in south-west London, said that the Department for Education needed to show “they are taking it seriously” and said that the Government should “work with schools and exam boards to produce some guidance on how to deal with this”.Responding to demands for guidance for schools, an Ofqual spokesman said: “We speak regularly with exam boards about risks, including malpractice risks, and will consider whether additional advice or guidance might be helpful.An IB spokesman said: “The use of ChatGPT or any other AI tool is against the IB’s academic integrity policy, and we expect all of our schools to discuss with students’ the various types of academic misconduct."
