MIT researchers have been very busy this year with projects like RoboCap and now, the MuscleRehab system. It enables physicians to see the inner structure of the body during physical rehab and consists of a tracking suit that measures the activity of quadriceps, sartorius, hamstrings, as well as abductors. When in this virtual world, the patient’s avatar performs alongside a physical therapist under two conditions. The second situation has the patient wearing EIT sensing straps for all the information of the motion and muscle engagement. When combined, these two conditions allow one to visualize both muscle engagement and motion data during these unsupervised exercises instead of just motion alone, thus improving overall accuracy of exercises by 15 percent."
