50 years of rockin' in the Cree worldTouring by freighter canoe, playing in hip waders among exploits for legendary northern Quebec cover bandAs a young rock band in northern Quebec, going out on tour by freighter canoe seemed like a great idea.An early incarnation of the legendary Cree cover band, the Fort George Rockers, set out in three 24-foot wooden boats for a two-week tour with their guitars, amplifiers, roadies and guides to gigs in Wemindji, Eastmain and Waskaganish.This weekend, the community of Chisasibi will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Fort George Rockers and their important place in Cree history with two shows and a banquet.During that tour by canoe in 1974, Louttit and Rupert remember needing to take refuge overnight in a storm on an island between Eastmain and Wemindji.“It was important for everyone, as we looked forward to the dances, it brought a sense of community fun,” said Jolly Diamond."
